BATON ROUGE, La. — There are losses you can explain away. Then there are losses that force you to start asking uncomfortable questions.
Clemson’s 51-10 loss to LSU falls into the second category.
After nearly a two-hour lightning delay, Clemson walked into one of college football’s toughest environments with an opportunity to make an early-season statement. Instead, the Tigers left Baton Rouge with a 41-point loss and plenty to figure out.
The night actually started well for Clemson. Ashton Hampton intercepted LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt on the second play from scrimmage, leading to a 49-yard Nolan Hauser field goal and an early 3-0 lead.
Then everything changed.
LSU answered with 31 consecutive points before halftime. One of the biggest blows came when Christopher Vizzina threw an interception that Jordan Ross returned 30 yards for a touchdown.
Head coach Dabo Swinney didn’t make excuses afterward.
“Just got outplayed, outcoached in every facet tonight, and there’s no other way to say it.”
Swinney also called Clemson’s showing an “embarrassing performance” and acknowledged that both the coaches and players have to own what happened.
And there is no way to dress it up.
Yes, LSU is talented. Yes, Baton Rouge is difficult. But Clemson is a program that has spent years establishing itself among college football’s elite. When you carry those expectations, losing by 41 points is going to create questions.
The biggest concern isn’t simply that Clemson lost. It’s how Clemson lost.
The offense never established a rhythm, Clemson went just 1-for-13 on third down, and the defense struggled to contain LSU’s rushing attack. Swinney admitted afterward that Clemson has “a lot of work to do.”
Now comes the response.
One game doesn’t define an entire season, but games like this can reveal plenty about a football team. Swinney made his message for his team clear:
“We can’t let it define us or destroy us. We’ve got to let it develop us.”
Clemson returns home to face Georgia Southern, and suddenly that game carries a little more weight.
The Tigers don’t simply need to win.
They need to look like Clemson again.
Because after what happened in Baton Rouge, the questions surrounding this team…and the direction of the program…aren’t going away anytime soon.
