The opening round of the SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament brought an exciting matchup to the Bon Secours Wellness Arena as the No. 12 seed Florida Gators women’s basketball squared off against the No. 13 seed Mississippi State Bulldogs women’s basketball. With both teams looking to strengthen their postseason outlook, the stakes were high in Greenville as the tournament officially tipped off.
From the opening tip, Florida established control and never looked back, using an aggressive offensive approach and balanced scoring to secure an impressive 86–68 victory over Mississippi State. The Gators set the tone early by pushing the pace and attacking the basket, forcing the Bulldogs to play from behind for the entire contest.
Leading the charge for Florida were standout guards Liv McGill and Me’Arah O’Neal, who each poured in 22 points in a dominant offensive performance. McGill showcased her ability to create scoring opportunities off the dribble while controlling the tempo of the game, while O’Neal provided a strong inside presence and efficient scoring around the rim. Their combined production proved difficult for Mississippi State to contain as the Gators continued to stretch their lead throughout the afternoon.
Florida’s offense operated with efficiency and rhythm, consistently finding quality looks and capitalizing on scoring runs that prevented the Bulldogs from gaining any real momentum. The Gators’ ability to score both in transition and in the half court forced Mississippi State to chase the game, ultimately putting the Bulldogs in a difficult position as the deficit continued to grow.
Mississippi State entered the SEC Tournament knowing a strong performance could help strengthen its résumé for postseason consideration. The Bulldogs battled throughout the game but struggled to match Florida’s offensive consistency. Despite moments where Mississippi State attempted to close the gap, Florida responded each time with timely baskets and defensive stops to maintain control.
As the second half unfolded, the Gators continued to dictate the pace and execution on both ends of the floor. Florida’s balanced scoring attack and defensive pressure ensured that Mississippi State never mounted a serious comeback attempt. By the final minutes, the Gators had firmly secured the victory and advanced comfortably to the next round.
With the win, Florida moves forward in the SEC Tournament with momentum and confidence as they prepare for the challenges ahead. Strong performances from McGill and O’Neal highlight a Gators team that appears to be hitting its stride at the right time of the season.
For Mississippi State, the loss marks a disappointing end to their run in Greenville. While the Bulldogs entered the tournament with hopes of making a statement, Florida’s dominant performance ultimately proved too much to overcome.
As the tournament continues in Greenville, the Gators now shift their focus to the next round, carrying with them the confidence of a commanding opening-round victory.
