DOVER, Del. – The Delaware State Hornets opened the 2022 season with a 34-0 victory over Lincoln (Pa.) on Saturday at Alumni Stadium.
Quarterback Jared Lewis threw for 87 yards and a touchdown while running back Marquis Gillis had game-highs of 12 rushes for 86 yards. Thomas Bertrand-Hudon, Wade Inge and C. J. Henry also rushed for a touchdown apiece.
Defensively, Brooks Parker had a team-high nine total tackles and had two tackles for loss.
The Hornets travel to Newark, Del. On Saturday to take on the University of Delaware at 6 p.m.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Host Marshall amassed 612 yards of total offense and scored on six straight possessions spanning the second and third quarters en route to a 55-3 win over Norfolk State in the season-opener for both teams on Saturday at Joan C. Edwards Stadium.
Jason Wonodi caught two passes for a team-high 50 yards for NSU. The Spartan defense got a career-high 12 tackles from R.J. Coles and 11 from Long. Marquis Hall and T.J. Stevenson both registered sacks on the day for NSU.
The Spartans are on the road again next Saturday against another new Sun Belt Conference opponent, James Madison. Kickoff is at 4 p.m. in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
Georgia Southern 59, Morgan State 7
STATESBORO, Ga. – The debut game of Morgan State head coach Damon Wilsonwasn’t what he hoped for.
The Bears hung in there early and often in the first half. But the miscues Morgan made proved costly as host Georgia Southern rode the arm of Kyle Vantrease to the tune of 367 passing yards in a 59-7 win over the Bears on Saturday night at Paulson Stadium.
Alfonzo Graham carried the offensive load for the Bears for most of the night. The senior finished the night with a game-high 106 yards on 14 carries and averaged 7.6 yards per carry. He also led the Bears in the passing game with three catches for 27 yards.
The Bears make the short trip to Towson, Md. For a 7 p.m. matchup with the Towson Tigers.
Hampton 31, Howard 28
HAMPTON, Va. – Howard University football team scored 22 fourth-quarter points, but fell short to rival Hampton in the 95th edition of the Battle of the Real HU, 31-28, at Armstrong Stadium on Saturday.
Senior quarterback Quinton Williams threw a career-high four touchdowns, including a pair of touchdowns to 6-foot-7 tight end Christion Carter, in the loss.
North Carolina Central 28, North Carolina A&T 13
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – North Carolina Central University junior quarterback Davius Richard accounted for all four Eagles’ touchdowns, two on the ground and two through the air, as NCCU knocked off rival North Carolina A&T State University, 28-13, in the Duke’s Mayo Classic inside Bank of America Stadium.
While Richard dazzled the crowd of 35,798 fans with 200 yards on 20-of-32 passing and a game-high 54 rushing yards on 13 carries, the NCCU defense yielded just one touchdown and held the Aggies scoreless in the second half.
Junior cornerback Brandon Codrington led the Eagles with seven tackles, followed by linebacker Jaki Brevard with six stops, and defensive back Kole Jones with five takedowns, including a pair of hits for a loss. Safety Khalil Baker also tallied five tackles, while contributing an interception and a pass break-up, both in the red zone to help keep A&T off the scoreboard.
Up next, NCCU hosts former CIAA foe Winston-Salem State University on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 6 p.m., inside O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium.
